UNITING FOR PEACE: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan addressing the all-party meeting in Kannur on Tuesday.

An all-party peace meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan here on Tuesday ended on a positive note with the leadership of the parties offering full support to steps for turning Kannur into a tension-free district.

“All parties represented at the peace meeting expressed the general feeling that Kannur should be free from unrest,” the Chief Minister told reporters after the meeting at the Collectorate conference hall in the morning.

Observing that the meeting refrained from conducting a post-mortem of past incidents, he said it seriously resolved to work for completion of peace exercises initiated at the level of the district administration and the government.

The ‘healthy initiative’ of leaders of all political parties jointly visiting bereaved families of slain party workers under the aegis of the district administration would send across a collective message that the people were with them, he said.

Mr. Vijayan said no representative of the parties alleged that incidents of violence had been planned and carried out under instruction of the respective party leadership.

It was, however, pointed out that there were sections of party workers in some places that were not acting as per the instructions of their leaders, he said, adding that the leaders vowed to intensify efforts to take the message of peace to their workers at the grassroots level.

Police to act tough

The Chief Minister said the meeting decided to ensure that the leadership of the parties concerned give clear instructions to their local units against amassing of weapons.

The police should also take action to unearth weapons and stop weapon-making in the district.
