A 47-year-old man was killed and 15 others injured, two of them seriously, when an elephant named Kurupath Sivasankaran went berserk at Choondal, near Kunnamkulam, on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Maliakkal Alocious, 47, of Pavaratty. He was trampled to death by the elephant at Thalakkottukara on Wadakkanchary-Kunnamkulam Road.

Elephant’s mahout Muthuvattor Azeez, 22, and a bus passenger Simson, who were seriously injured in the attack, have been admitted to a private hospital.

The elephant became restless in the morning and attacked its mahout at 7.30 a.m. The animal, which entered the main road, attacked a bus injuring 13 passengers.

In its three-hour-long rampage, the elephant attacked a tipper lorry, auto rickshaw and a van triggering panic in two villages Eranellur and Chiranellur in Choondal Panchayat.

People ran helter-skelter. Vehicular traffic was blocked in the Thrissur–Kunnamkulam Road and Aloor-Kechery Road.

The veterinary experts tranquillised the elephant by 11.30 a.m.
