Blaming the Left Democratic Front government for its failure to conduct local body elections at right time, Opposition leader Oommen Chandy has said while UDF government was in power, elections were held at right time as per schedule.
Speaking at a reception yesterday given to him for completing 40 years as member in Kerala Legislative Assembly, Mr Chandy said if the local body elections were held as per 73rd Constitution Amendment Act the new ministry would have sworn on October 2.
He said the LDF government had not utilised the fund received from the state planning Board properly for administrative purpose of local body institutions.
The former chief minister said the focal point of UDF campaign would be the wide disparity in the claims and actions by LDF government in the area of decentralisation and empowerment of Panchayati Raj institutions.
To a question, he said the party had given due consideration to its constituent allies in the seat sharing process. Compared to the sixties and seventies youths did not get their due share in the Congress. It was not because the youths were devoid of organisational qualities. Other factors had doomed the prospects of youth.
He said this time 50 per cent of the seat will be earmarked for youths in the local body polls.
