CM’s concern over land conversion by 'fake’ companies

September 11, 2009 07:32 pm | Updated 07:32 pm IST - PATHANAMTHITTA

The Chief Minister, V.S.Achuthanandan, has expressed concern over the growing trend of "landlords" floating "fake companies" for conversion of farmlands.

Mr Achuthanandan was inaugurating the newly constructed office building of the CPI(M) area committee in Thiruvalla on Friday.

He said there were reports of such landlords purchasing land from the poor at a grossly unreasonable price with the help of goonda elements.

The Chief Minister said the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front government could do a great deal in checking such exploitation of the poor by ``landlords’’ through appropriate legislations.

He said LDF government has enacted legislation to protect farm lands and wetlands.

Mr. Achuthanandan said the common people have taken Communists as their representatives which ultimately led to the growth, popularity and acceptance of the party across the country.

He said the LDF government has decided to reserve 50 per cent seats for women in the local self-government institutions.

Mr K.Ananthagpan, CPI(M) district secretary, presided the meet. Mr Raju Abraham, Mr Mathew T.Thomas, Mr K.C.Rajagopalan, MLAs, Mr R.Sanalkumar, District Co-operative Bank president, Mr A.Lopez, CPI(M) district committee member and Mr Kocheeppan Mappilai, area committee secretary, also spoke.
