The Alappuzha district administration on Wednesday launched Alleppey Water Challenge, an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of drinking water shortage in the district.

Muralee Thummarukudy, Chief of Disaster Risk Reduction, UN Environment Programme, inaugurated the programme from Geneva on Facebook Live.

The website of the project, http://www.alleppey

waterchallenge.org , was launched by 96-year-old Karthyayani Amma, the oldest learner to clear the Aksharalaksham literacy examination of the Kerala State Literacy Mission.

As part of it, the administration will set up 1,000 reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment plants in the district with public support in the next six months.

District Collector S. Suhas has urged people including individuals, politicians, elected representatives, corporate firms and socio-cultural organisations to take part in the challenge.

Sponsors

“The district has numerous water sources but water in them is not suitable for drinking due to pollution. This is the reason for launching the initiative. We request individuals and organisations to come forward to sponsor water treatment plants in the affected areas,” Mr. Suhas said.

As part of the initiative, three types of RO plants, 100 LPH, the second with 500 LPH, which can purify even water from backwaters, and third a bigger plant with 2,000 LPH will be installed as per the needs of the place.

“Through the website anyone can show their interest for sponsoring any of the three types of plant. Details of booking, work progress, completion, inauguration, will be updated daily on the website as well as on the District Collector's official Facebook page,” Mr. Suhas said.

The Collector said the plant would be inaugurated by those who sponsor them.

Places listed

“We have listed out almost all aided and government schools, panchayat/ municipal offices and village offices for installing RO plants. If any one knowing the situation of a place where a plant is required and suggests a public place where RO plant can be installed, it will be considered,” he said.
