October 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - Mandya:

Nilaya Mitash, Secretary, Department of Commerce and Industries, has promised speedy completion of the ongoing overhauling works of boiler and other machinery at the State-owned Mysore Sugar Company Ltd. (Mysugar).

He paid a visit to the sugar factory on Sunday to inspect the repair works, which started about two months ago. Entry for mediapersons was restricted during his visit.

However, according to senior officials, Mr. Mitash convened a meeting with some labourers on the factory premises after the inspection.

Technical committee

Mr. Mitash said the State government had formed a technical committee to supervise the boiler repair works as it [works] require maximum care and there will be no dearth of funds for the repair works.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mitash was urged to initiate measures to reinstate the sacked workers as well as to “immediately release” pending salaries of the workers.

Steps taken

The factory management had removed some workers recently on various charges.

“We requested Mr. Mitash to take steps for the speedy completion of the repair works to commence cane crushing, reinstating the sacked workers and to release pending salaries to safeguard the interests of workers/sugarcane growers,” a worker told The Hindu. Cane crushing for the 2015-16 season has not started yet at Mysugar as the 82-year-old company, once one of the biggest sugar factories in Asia, had developed major technical snags in during the crushing season 2014-15.

Subsequently, the management had taken up overhauling works.

Deputy Commissioner M.N. Ajay Nagabhushan was among those present.
