Women residents of Sri Nagar slum areas protested in Belagavi on Wednesday saying BJP leader Anil Benake had insulted them by supplying sanitary napkins.

They stood outside their huts holding the pads distributed allegedly by the leader. They submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner and district electoral officer S. Ziyaullah saying the pads were distributed on March 29. Some people, who claimed to be supporters of Mr. Benake, gave us these pads. They have insulted us by doing so, they said.

They sought an inquiry into the incident and action against the leader.

Mr. Benake has clarified that he had donated funds to a NGO whose members may have distributed the pads. He said it was part of his social service activities and not political. He also denied information about it.

He suspected political vendetta behind the protest. “My political enemies are behind this,” he said.
