A 35-year-old woman allegedly killed her five-year-old daughter and later, committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling beam in her house at Mollenahalli in Srirangapatna on Tuesday.

The Arakere police gave the names of the duo as T. Rani and her daughter R. Jamuna.

Dowry harassment might have prompted Ms. Rani to take the extreme step, the police said.

Ms. Rani was married to Ramesh about seven years ago. Ramesh and his father Thimme Gowda were allegedly harassing Ms. Rani to bring additional dowry from her father Bette Gowda, the police said.

The incident came to light when the neighbours entered her house and saw the bodies. Later, they alerted the police. The bodies were shifted to a government hospital by the police for post-mortem. While Ramesh was arrested, a team has been formed to trace his father. The Arakere police have registered a case.
