Home Minister G. Parameshwara on Tuesday said some pharma companies in and around Devanahalli were manufacturing tablets laced with narcotics and exporting them to other countries.

Responding to a question in the Legislative Council on the increasing drug menace in the State and “inaction” by the government to curb it, the Home Minister said, “It has come to our notice that some companies are doing this on a small scale as of now. We have taken serious note of this and have initiated measures to curb this.”

He said such tablets worth over ₹5 crore were been recently seized by the Customs officials at the Kempegowda International Airport. Asserting that his government had taken stringent steps to check drug menace, he said, “We will not allow Karnataka to go the ‘Udta Punjab’ way.”

The Minister said the government had taken the matter seriously and directed the police to take stringent action against drug peddlers.

“It has come to the notice of the police that petty shops near colleges indulge in peddling. We have posted police in mufti near schools and colleges. After the new government took over, 56 cases were booked. Of these, 11 were in Mangaluru,” he added.
