The University of Mysore, which is on the threshold of its centenary year, is planning to seek a ‘Research University’ status from the Centre.
The recognition will qualify the university for special grants to strengthen its research establishment.
Vice-Chancellor K.S. Rangappa told The Hindu that a proposal in this regard would be submitted to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development.
“I think the Mysuru varsity is suited for the distinction. Its strength is in its research collaborations and tie-ups with reputed universities and institutions. Moreover, its research accomplishments and patents are aplenty. The decision, however, rests with the expert panel,” he said.
Members of the expert committee will visit the university, after the proposal is moved, to assess its case before giving a opinion. Mr. Rangappa said the Centre is expected to set aside Rs. 500 crore for promoting universities identified as ‘Research Universities’.
