The district-level convention of Vishwakarma community on June 21 in Hubballi, where meritorious students would be felicitated, would also be a platform for highlighting several of the demands of the community, State president of Karnataka Rajya Vishwakarma Mahamandal L. Nagarajachar has said.

Addressing presspersons, along with district president of the Mahamandal Basavaraj Pattar, here on Friday, Mr. Nagarajachar said that because of the efforts of community members, the State government had, in 2007, released special grants for artisans of the community for building houses.

However, barring Haveri and Gadag districts, in no other districts funds were released for construction of the houses through the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation. In all 21,000 members of the community had applied for assistance to the corporation. He said that in Dharwad, assistance had not been given to the 950 beneficiaries and during the convention, the issue would be raised again.

Mr. Nagarajachar said that the Mahamandal would also urge Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to provide political representation to the community in appointments to boards and corporation.

The convention would be attended by Dharwad district in-charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, BJP State president Pralhad Joshi, the former Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar and others, he added.
