Varsity committee to study Lyngdoh panel recommendations

The Academic Council of the Kuvempu University here on Wednesday resolved to form a committee to study the implementation of the Lyngdoh committee recommendations on students’ union elections.

In-charge Vice-Chancellor T.R. Manjunath said the committee had recommended conducting elections regularly for student representation bodies in universities and colleges.

He said the University Grants Commission had written to the university in September 2014 to implement these recommendations. But after the Karnataka Universities Act, 2000 was enforced, the system of providing representation to students in Syndicates of the universities by conducting elections was cancelled. It is necessary to amend the law to conduct elections, he said.

Prof. Manjunath said the union is a platform for students to air grievances. Dean of Commerce faculty J. Made Gowda said that as the UGC has directed the university to implement the recommendations, the Academic Council should give in-principle approval for it. Mr. Manjunath said the committee comprising senior professors and members of the Academic Council would be formed.
