Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority Muzaffar Ahmad said that the advances made in Science and Technology should be put to use fully to reduce the impact of natural disasters to the bare minimum on human life as well as public and private properties.
Speaking at the inauguration of a 2-day Karnataka Science and Technology Academy Conference on ‘Science and Technology for Disaster Management’, organised jointly by the Central University of Karnataka and Karnataka Science and Technology Academy (KSTA) in Kalaburagi on Thursday, Dr. Ahmad said that there has been a paradigm shift in taking up relief after natural disasters, for preventive measures to limit the damage before the natural disasters in the country in recent years.
Dr. Ahmed said unlike in other countries, India had a unique advantage of the entire nation fully backing the relief works in the affected areas.
The advances made in space technology has made it possible for forewarning exactly when the cyclone would hit the coast and about impending floods. People should be mentally prepared for facing the situation and taking up relief work in the aftermath of the natural disasters, he said.
He said with a fool-proof disaster management technology put in place with the help of science and technology, the country can save a lot of lives. Member Secretary of the KSTA and senior scientist H. Honne Gowda said that the unique weather conditions in India was mainly responsible for recurring natural disasters like floods, droughts and minor earthquakes.
Vice-Chancellor of the Central University of Karnataka M.N.S. Rao was present.
