May Day celebrations were organised by the Udupi unit of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) here on Wednesday.
Speaking on the occasion, K. Mahantesh, secretary of State unit of CITU, said that the Narendra Modi government had failed in creating jobs for the youth in the last five years. The last five years had seen lowest level of employment generation in the country.
Demonetisation had affected generation of jobs in the urban areas. With the result, people had started to migrate from urban to rural areas. Though various workers’ organisations had sought ₹18,000 per month as minimum wages, this had still not come to force. It was incumbent on the government and the managements to protect the legitimate rights of the workers, he said.
Mr. Modi had visited several countries. It would have been better if he had the studied the condition of labourers there and implemented the same in the country. These days there were no debates or discussions on the demands of the workers, he said.
Though Mr. Modi had addressed several election campaign meetings, he had avoided touching upon the issues of unemployment, demonetisation, farmer suicides, agrarian distress and Goods and Services Tax. Instead, he had concentrated his election speeches only on Pakistan and airstrikes on Balakot, Mr. Mahantesh said. G. Rajashekhar, writer, Rama Karkada, President of Udupi unit of CITU, Kaviraj, General Secretary, Umesh Kundar, Treasurer, Admar Sripati Acharya, Shashidhar Golla, Balakrishna Shetty, Saroja, Nalini, labour leaders, were present.
