Minister of State for Women and Child Development Umashree took objection to the statements of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sakshi Maharaj and seer Swami Vasudevananda Saraswathi that Hindu women should give birth to at least four children.

She said that by saying so they were trying to deny a woman her rights to make such decisions, and termed it “an insult against womenfolk”.

Ms. Umashree was at the district Government Hospital to visit the children who were injured in a gas cylinder blast at Indiranagar in Chikkanayakanahalli taluk on Friday.

The Minister said children are not born by chanting mantras, and that many families are struggling to make ends meet. It is not advisable for politicians and seers to make such statements, she said. While the country is facing population explosion and unemployment, it is unfair to give such advice to women. It is neither good for the health of women nor for the society, she said.

Out of danger

The children injured in the blast are out of danger, the Minister said. One child has 22 per cent burns and the other 32 per cent burns, she said.

Sakshi Maharaj stirred a controversy by asking Hindu women to produce at least four children
