Ugrappa condemns new cattle slaughter curbs

The Centre’s new rules restricting sale of cattle for slaughter at livestock markets is a “surgical strike” by the BJP government on farmers’ economy and food habits of a majority of people in the country, said V.S. Ugrappa, Congress MLC.

Addressing presspersons here on Saturday, he came down heavily on the BJP government at the Centre for imposing restriction on the sale of cattle in markets.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is trying to divert people’s attention by raising such sentimental issues and keeping them involved by discussing these issues. If the federal system and democracy in the country has to be protected, it is high time that people teach Mr. Modi a lesson,” he said.

Replying to queries, he said that although the rules do not explicitly ban cow slaughter, the Centre is indirectly trying to do so by laying down restrictions on sale of cattle, under the new rules.

CM’s reaction

Speaking in Kalaburagi on Saturday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said he would examine the new rules and decide whether to implement it in the State. “It is a State subject and we already have an Act on it.”

Meanwhile in Hubballi, Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra said the State government was yet to get the full details on the new rules and would react only after it .

He said it should be implemented in a manner that does not lead to conflict.
