Udupi to get urban primary health centre soon

It will help the poor in urban areas, says DC

R. Vishal, Deputy Commissioner, said on Friday that an Urban Primary Health Centre (UPHC) would be set up at the district government hospital here soon.

He was speaking at a meeting of the district vigilance and monitoring committee here.

Dr. Vishal said that the centre would provide the facilities provided by a Primary Health Centre in rural areas. It would have the services of a medical officer, a part-time specialist, a staff nurse, a pharmacist and others. It would basically help the poor people in the urban areas, he said.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Rohini said that the exact location for the centre was yet to be decided. But it was likely to be located at the place where the Panchakarma Department was functioning, after the latter was shifted, she said.

District Horticulture Officer Vijaykumar said that of the 19 cases related to excess payment to farmers for kole roga disease for arecanut in the district about a couple of years go, six had repaid the excess money. Notices had been issued to the remaining persons, he said.

Excess payment

Shobha Karandlaje, MP, said that the officers accused of making excess payment should not be sent for recovery of excess dues as they would cover it up. Dr. Vishal said that he would look into the case.

Ganapati Bhat, Joint Director of Fisheries, informed the meeting that Rs. 5 crore was being spent for dredging at Malpe Fisheries Harbour. A sum of Rs. 6 crore had been sought from the government for dredging work of Kodibengre Fisheries Harbour, he said.

Tribal development

Dr. Vishal informed the meeting that the district had Rs. 28 crore for tribal development. It had been decided to use this money and set up six mobile health units with doctors and nurses. These units would move in Maoist-affected areas and provide healthcare there. Moves were also on to provide houses for members of the Koraga community in Thekkakate village, he said.

Ms. Karandlaje urged the officers to get more students for the Kendriya Vidyalaya set up in Udupi. So far only 34 students had been admitted, she said.

Dr. Vishal directed the Deputy Director of Public Instruction to provide five rooms at the Vadabhandeshwara Government High School for the Vidyalaya.
