Elections to the 17th Lok Sabha will be held in Karnataka in two phases — on April 18 and 23. While 14 constituencies in south Karnataka will go to the polls on April 18, 14 constituencies in north Karnataka will go to the polls on April 23.
Counting of votes would be taken up on May 23.
The model code of conduct came into effect in the State from 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Constituencies that would go to the polls on April 18 are Bengaluru South, Bengaluru North, Bengaluru Central, Bengaluru Rural, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, Chitradurga, Tumakuru, Mandya, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Chickballapur, and Kolar.
Those that would go to the polls on April 23 are Chikkodi, Belagavi, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Bidar, Koppal, Ballari, Haveri, Dharwad, Uttara Kannada, Davangere, and Shivamogga.
Notification
Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar told presspersons that notification for the first phase of elections would be issued on March 19, while the last day for filing of nominations was March 26. The papers would be scrutinised on March 27 and the last day for withdrawal of nominations would be March 29.
In the second phase, authorities would notify the polling process on March 28, while the last day for filing nominations is April 4. The papers would be scrutinised on April 5 while last day for withdrawal of nomination would be April 8. Polling will be on April 23.
5.34 crore voters
As on March 10, 2019, a total of 5.34 crore voters (2.54 crore male, 2.48 crore female, and 4,718 others) were eligible to exercise their franchise across the State. The total number of new voters stood at 8.25 lakh.
More than 99% of the voters enrolled in the list have photo identity cards, Mr. Kumar added.
Of the 28 constituencies, five are reserved for the Scheduled Castes and two for the Scheduled Tribes.
