Two farmers, who supplied sugarcane to NSL Sugar factory in Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district, attempted suicide by consuming pesticide in front of the sugar factory at Bhusnoor village on Thursday.

The farmers — Mallappa Sharanappa and Siddaram Basappa — were immediately shifted to the primary health centre at Bhusnoor and later shifted to the taluk hospital in Aland.

Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal issued notice to the factory management to settle the dues of the farmers within a week. Similar notices were likely to be issued to Renuka Sugars for the settlement of the dues of the growers for the sugarcane supplied last year.

A 59-year-old debt-ridden farmer, Ratan Singh Kishan Singh Paga, who consumed pesticide on Wednesday at Nelogi village in Jewargi taluk, died at a private hospital in Kalaburagi city on Thursday.

The farmer, who owned 4 acres of dry land in Nelogi village, suffered losses due to crop failure last year.

The farmer had taken Rs. 12 lakh from private moneylenders and Rs. 50,000 from Pragati Krishna Grameena Bank.
