The Transport Department disabled the child lock system in several cabs across Bengaluru division on Friday.

According to a press release issued by the department, officials have checked over 1,000 cabs and disabled the child locks in them. A special drive was also conducted at the airport parking lot by the Regional Transport Office who educated the drivers to disable the locks in the cabs.

In December, the department had made a rule that child lock facilities should be disabled in all cabs and a Public Interest Litigation too was filed in the High Court of Karnataka in this regard.

Additional Transport Commissioners C.P. Narayana Swamy said they have taken up the drive for the safety of passengers. Passengers have welcomed the move and feel it would particularly help solo female passengers feel safer.

Sanjana Srinath, who regular uses taxi aggregators, said the department should develop a mechanism to report cabs if the child lock facility still existed.
