Several hundreds of passengers, including those travelling towards Bengaluru and many places of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, faced the heat of agrarian crisis after farmers squatting on the highway and blocking the traffic. Heavy police security was provided during the protest.

Traffic was affected on Wednesday after farmers squatted on the highway and blocked the road protesting against the agrarian crisis.

A large number of cars, public transport vehicles and inter-State goods carriers were stranded on the highway following the protest organised to highlight the plight of the farming community.

The Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) and Hasiru Sene had organised the agitation to draw attention of the Union and the State governments towards the withering crops across the district.

Farmers from different parts of the district participated in the agitation and vented their ire against the governments.

The farming community has taken up cultivation of summer crops on at least 10,000 acres. Of them, paddy and sugarcane have been withering because of the stoppage of water to canals.

The KRRS has been staging demonstrations at different parts of the district since the second week of June demanding Cauvery and Hemavati waters to save the crops that have been attaining the harvesting stage.

The agitators also demanded the State government to initiate measures to start the cane crushing operation at Mysugar mill.
