While several residents of the city are complaining that enumerators of the Social and Educational Survey have not visited their homes, some others are getting special treatment as over half a dozen enumerators and officials have landed at their doorstep. When a journalist told officials that no one had visited her house, three enumerators rushed to her doorstep.
Several other officials, who too had made similar complaints to the helpline, said that over half a dozen enumerators and senior officials landed up at their doorstep.
Multiple roles
When a reporter enters a space where he or she is not expected, she/he is seen as just another citizen. But once their identity is known, they become the representative for all its departments.
When a reporter walked into a government department one afternoon and introduced herself, an official said, “Yes…your cheque is ready.” Caught off guard, the reporter asked, “Cheque for what, sir?” “For the subscription,” came the reply.
The official was in touch with the circulation department for renewal of subscription and assumed that the reporter would not mind collecting the cheque on their behalf.
