Three get life imprisonment in Manipal gangrape case

Two sentenced to three years rigourous imprisonment for destroying evidence

The District and Sessions Court on Thursday convicted the three persons to life imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 1.10 lakh each for abducting and > gang-raping a MBBS student hailing from Kerala at Ontibettu near Manipal on June 21, 2013. The three convicted persons are Yogish Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Ananda.

The Court also punished two others – Balachandra and Harindra - for destruction of evidence in the same case with three years of rigourous imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 5,000 each. The judgement was delivered was delivered by the District and Sessions Judge Shivashankar B. Amarannavar at mid-noon here.

It may be recalled that a medical student of Manipal University hailing from Kerala was abducted and gangraped near Manipal on June 20, 2013. After a massive manhunt, the police nabbed Yogish Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary, and Anand on June 27, 2013. They were charged under Sections 366, 376D, 506 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

The police had also arrested two persons Balachandra, brother of Yogesh, and Harindra, brother of Hariprasad, on the charge of trying to destroy evidence on July 2, 2013.
