Taking the lead in helping students who have failed the SSCL examination, teachers from Dakshina Kannada will conduct special classes for a month from May 15. The exams will commence on June 21.

Deputy Director of Public Instruction Y. Shivaramaiah said many students discontinue studies following failure in class 10. “We are trying to help these children clear this exam which opens up various avenues for growth,” he told The Hindu .

Of the 27,564 students who wrote the examination this year, 3,624 failed to clear it — an improvement from 2018 when 4,054 students failed out of28,068.

Of the 3,624 students, 817 are from Bantwal education block which has more students from the minority community. Mangaluru South block has 750 students, followed by Mangaluru North (656), Puttur (647), Belthangady (290), Sullia (285), and Moodbidri (179).

Bantwal Block Education Officer Shivaprakash said there are more number of failures in a single subject, more so in social science. “The pass percentage of a school in Panemangaluru is 52%, which is also the average percentage of marks scored by the students of that school in social science,” he said. The headmaster of a government school in Bantwal block said social science had some questions that many students found difficult to answer.

Mr. Shivaprakash said teachers have volunteered to coach the students who failed. “Our responsibility does not end with preparing students for the main examination,” he said. A school-wise action plan for coaching is being drawn up. The classes will first be conducted by teachers of the subject that has the most number of failures. Each failed student will be called and asked to attend these classes.

Mr. Shivaramaiah said thee coaching classes would be held in schools with number of failed students. Students of schools within a 5-km radius, where the number of failures is in single digits, will be called to these classes, he said.
