It appears that lessons have not been learnt from the unfortunate drowning of 27-year-old Mallikarjun Amaregowda during the immersion of Ganesha idol on September 22 in the immersion pond adjacent the Sharanabasaveshwar Tank in Kalaburagi.

After the drowning, the police regulated the immersion of idols on the ninth and 11th day preventing any further mishaps in the immersion tank.

But the authorities have failed to take any precautionary measures to prevent people from approaching the tank filled with plastic bags, flowers and other puja material during the immersion of the puja materials of Dasara.

The corporation authorities have not cleared flowers and other materials dumped in the immersion pond and the dumping of puja materials of Dasara has made the water unusable in the immersion tank.

On Saturday, the tank was visited by hundreds of people, particularly young children, with discarded puja material to be dumped in the immersion tank. Not a single city corporation official or the police were present in the tank premises and many children were seen going into the water to dump the puja material.
