A pall of gloom gripped residents, particularly film connoisseurs and critics, following the untimely demise of Subhash Chougule (57) at KLES’s Prabhakar Kore Hospital in the city on Sunday morning.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Mr. Chougule, founder-president of the Ajanta Film Society, was also responsible for the opening of the new Ajanta Cultural Centre at Visvesvaraya Nagar in the city last year. The Centre has been organising film festivals and featuring award-winning films in Indian and foreign languages, besides organising film appreciation programmes.

He was also a social activist who worked towards the development of the city. He worked as a State government employee and served as personal assistant to the former MLA Ramesh L. Kudachi and later as personal assistant to Feroz N. Sait, MLA (Belagavi North).

He was hospitalised 40 days ago, following complaints of severe headache, and had undergone a surgery. However, his condition deteriorated and he breathed his last at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday.

As per his last wish, his body was donated to the Belgaum Institute of Medical Sciences for research. A large number of relatives, well-wishers and friends were present.
