The online skill development course to be started by Akkamahadevi Women’s University is aimed at improving students’ employability.

Akkamahadevi Women’s University has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with State University, New York, to begin an online certificate course in skill development.

The university plans to start the course within the next four months by identifying colleges that have adequate resources.

The course will be held in four departments, Business skills in Engineering and Management, Technical and Professional Communication skills, Supply-chain Management and HR and Soft Skills.

P.G. Tadsad, HOD, Department of Library and Information Science, said that final year graduate and post-graduates are eligible for the certificate course. The courses are meant to provide skill development training to students to increasing their employability in the market.

“We produce so many academically excellent students every year. However, in the absence of practical knowledge and communication skills, they are unable to find jobs easily. Therefore, we have decided to open courses that will help them improve upon this aspect,” Prof. Tadsad said.

He added that in the beginning, the university would start the course only in ten colleges, mainly in the North Karnataka region bearing in mind the availability of resources.

Since the course would be based on a particular IP address, the students would have to come to college everyday to open the website and study for a stipulated number of hours to complete the course. “Meanwhile, a contact programme of ten days would also be conducted in which students will interact with experts on the subject,” he said.

He claimed that the course fees would be nominal. The number of seats would be based on the availability of computers in the colleges.
