Admitting that migration in search of better livelihood is prevalent among the Lambani community, Jalaja Naik, Chairperson, Karnataka Tanda Development Corporation (KTDC), has said that the corporation decided to encourage self-employment programmes for members of this community, to prevent this practice.
Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, she said that the corporation was contemplating giving cows to the people of the community.
She said that dairy farming gives additional revenue to the family, which could prevent the people from migrating to other States. Lamenting that the traditional art of the Lambani community has not gained enough popularity in the handicraft sector, Ms. Naik said that the corporation would like to set up at least 12 handicraft centres to promote the cottage industry for the Lambanis.
“These centres would purchase the handicrafts from the community and sell it to the buyers,” she said.
Tailoring training
She said that since many women in the community have not completed even SSLC, the corporation would train them in tailoring to promote their self-employment.
“During training, the women would be given a stipend of Rs. 1,500 also. The decision on supplying sewing machines would be taken later as it needs government approval,” she said.
