A seven-year-old boy fell into an overflowing open drain at Santraswadi locality in Kalaburagi on Monday evening following heavy rainfall and got washed away. Various agencies conducted search operations for the last 19 hours and failed to trace the body.

Krishna R. Hatwala, the victim, was feared drowned after he went to retrieve a cricket ball from the overflowing drain. His friends noticed that he had slipped and disappeared into the water.

Rescue service personnel suspect that the victim got stuck in weeds and debris. The police, along with a team of Fire and Emergency Services officials, launched a search operation in all connecting drains and pits and at the main outlet near Naganahalli village on the outskirts of the city on Monday evening that continued till Tuesday. However, the body remained untraced when reports came in at 7 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

Kalaburagi district continued to be lashed by heavy rains since last night. It recorded 10.7 mm rain in city in the last 24 hours till 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
