Schoolchildren take to the streets seeking facilities

October 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - DHARWAD:

Students of Government Primary School in Mugad village took to the streets seeking basic amenities on their campus, here on Saturday.

The children held a demonstration outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office displaying placards demanding an approach road to the school and ensuring sanitation facilities and cleanliness on school campus.

In a memorandum submitted to Deputy Commissioner P. Rajendra Cholan, the students said that they were finding it difficult to reach the school as there was no approach road. Although midday meal was being provided, it was not hygienic.

The school also lacked a playing ground. Absence of toilets was forcing the children to go for open defecation, the memorandum said.

The memorandum said that the efforts by the gram panchayat members and the School Development and Monitoring Committee members had failed to yield results.
