Will the authorities pay attention to the condition of the Silver Jubilee Clock Tower and take steps for its restoration?
Over a decade ago, experts had recommended its restoration to enhance its life. However, action was not taken.
When contacted, City corporation commissioner C.G. Betsurmath, who is also the Commissioner for State Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, told The Hindu , “I will inspect the clock tower soon and efforts will be made to include it under the plan of conservation of heritage monuments.”
Chandrashekar Iyer, the city’s octogenarian horologist, said the clock tower had been built using brick and mortar.
“When I had climbed up the tower to inspect the functioning of the clock several years ago, I found the structure in a weak condition and felt it needed some repair.”
“I am not an engineer, but I can confidently say that the tower will become strong for another 50 years if the restoration is taken up immediately,” he suggested.
Pride of Mysuru
Veteran journalist K.V. Srinivasan recalled the olden days when the clock tower was the city’s timekeeper. “As not many had wristwatch, especially people from rural areas, it was the keeping their time.”
“It is a pride of Mysuru,” he said, adding that the chimes were keeping the people, including the business community, conscious about their routine.
