The proposed move to close down the post office near Bankapur Chowk here came in for flak with residents of the area blocking the road in protest against the decision.
The protest was held on Thursday under the banner of the Karnataka Madiga Dandora, the Madiga Meesalati Horata Samiti and the Uttara Karnataka Rakshana Vedike.
The protesters said the post office catered to the needs of residents of four wards of the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation. People of Bankapur Chowk, Indiranagar, Yallapur Oni, Desai Oni, Veerapur Road, Badiger Oni, Gabbur Oni, Bhoospet, Islampur, Bidnal and surrounding areas had been using the services for the last 40 years.
It was the only means by which around 60,000 people could get access to postal services, savings accounts and purchase of savings certificates, they said. Closing the post office or merging it with another would be inconvenient, they added.
Gangadhar Perur, who led the agitation, claimed that the authorities were going ahead with their plan despite an appeal from Pralhad Joshi, MP, to the Postmaster General.
The protesters submitted a memorandum addressed to the Assistant Superintendent of Post.
