Residents of Maniakere boycott polling

About 325 people from Mavinakere, a village in K.R. Pet taluk, abstained from voting during the gram panchayat elections on Friday, in protest against the district administration setting up a polling booth at the neighbouring village Alambadi.

The residents said, the polling booth was almost three km away from their village.

“We have been demanding that a separate polling booth be set up in our village. However, the district administration has established the booth at another village,” one of the residents complained.

They staged a protest by blocking the road for a while.

Officials of the Election Commission, the Police and Revenue departments visited the village and tried to convince the people.

However, the protestors refused to go over to Alambadi and cast their votes on Friday.

Re-polling would not be held as the residents of Mavinakere had abstained from exercising their franchise, P.S. Kantharaju, Election Observer, told The Hindu.
