‘Rehabilitate rescued bonded labourers’

The Hassan district Legal Services Authority, on Thursday, directed the district administration to take proper measures for the rehabilitation of 52 people, working as bonded labourers, rescued by the police. The authority held a meeting under the chairmanship of District and Sessions Judge K.S. Thimmannachar.

Hassan police rescued 52 people from different parts of the State and neighbouring States forced to work as bonded labourers at Savankanahalli in Hassan taluk on Sunday night. The administration has provided shelter for the rescued people in a Morarji Residential School near Dudda in Hassan taluk.

Assistant Commissioner H.L. Nagaraju said the administration had taken steps to provide compensation for the people.

Superintendent of Police A.N. Prakash Gowda said two accused had been arrested and efforts were on to nab the remaining accused. The rescued would be sent to their native places after the necessary documentation was over.

Sridhar, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department, said that among those rescued 16 people belonged to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The police had booked a case against the accused as per the provisions under the SC-ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
