The water-level in the Krishnarajasagar (KRS) near Srirangapatna is likely to touch the dead-storage level by this weekend, even as it receded to 76.27 ft. against the maximum level of 124.8 ft. on Monday morning.
The dead-storage level at KRS is 74 ft. While the inflow rate was 930 cusecs a second at 6.30 a.m. on Monday, the outflow was at 2,800 cusecs.
The reservoir, which provides water for both irrigation and drinking purposes to several districts in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, is drying up owing to lack of rain in the Cauvery catchment areas. The plummeting water-level is causing concern for the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam Ltd. (CNNL).
Meanwhile, a senior official of the CNNL has appealed to the people not to waste water for washing vehicles or gardening as it would be difficult to ensure supply of drinking water, once the water-level touches the dead-storage level.
The downstream of the KRS witnessed heavy rainfall for several days, recently. However, the Cauvery catchment areas in Kodagu and upstream areas are yet to receive rain, the official said.
