‘May Day’ was observed in Bidar on Friday. Some organizations took out rallies while others held meetings.
Members of various labour unions and communist party of India got together in the Raitha Bhavan to discuss issues related to labourers.
Baburao Honna, labour leader, spoke of the 1886 Chicago hangings that led to May 1 being recongised as labour day. He said that the Union government was transferring all public properties to Corporates, without taking up welfare programmes for the poor.
In the name of inviting foreign investment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was trying to amend labour laws to suite the interests of capitalists, he said. He said that the ‘Make In India’ campaign was just another name for diluting labour protection provisions in various laws. He lamented that all labour protection measures that were ensured after independence were gradually lost after the privatisation, globalisation and liberalisation policies of 1991.
