In a raid on various godowns, processing units and edible oil factory in the twin cities, the officials of Department of Food and Civil Supplies have seized pulses, oil seeds and edible oil worth over Rs. 42 crore.

Speaking to presspersons after a raid on a processing unit at Hosa Gabbur on the outskirts of Hubballi on Thursday, Senior Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies Sadashiv Marji said that during the raid on Sai Dal Industries, they found that the unit was functioning without valid licence.

He said 120 quintals of tur dal, 48 quintals of green gram and 20 quintals of Bengal gram at the processing unit would be seized.

Mr. Marji said that during a raid on edible oil manufacturing unit Teena Industries at Belur Industrial Estate on the outskirts of Dharwad on Wednesday, officials seized 3,516 tonnes of soyabean and sunflower seeds, 1,555 tonnes of edible oil and 1,180 tonnes of raw edible oil worth Rs. 40.43 crore.

In a raid on godowns of the Central Warehousing Corporation at Tajnagar in Hubballi on Wednesday, it was found that 1,382 quintals of Bengal gram, 51 quintals of green gram , 159 quintals of urad dal and 2,629 quintals of soyabeans worth Rs. 1.89 crore had been stored in the names of farmers and two traders. “We have seized the stock on the charges of hoarding. We suspect that the traders have kept the pulses at CWC godowns in the name of farmers. We will check whether the pulses were actually grown by farmers or not and if it is found that they are genuine farmers, then it will be released to them”, he said.

Mr. Marji clarified that the pulses and edible oil would remain seized till the outcome of further inquiry and orders from the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad. He said that the raids would continue against hoarding of pulses and edible oil.
