Workers of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Mandya unit, were embroiled in a controversy here on Monday by consuming alcohol in a public place to criticise Congress leader Ramya’s tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The actor turned politician Ramya (Divya Spandana), a former Mandya MP who is heading the All India Congress Committee (AICC) social media team, had on Sunday tweeted, “Is this what happens when you’re on POT?” while commenting on Mr. Modi’s address to party workers in Bengaluru.
Around 30 BJP workers, headed by city unit president Aravinda, staged a demonstration near Sir M. Visvesvaraya statue off the Bengaluru-Mysuru highway where some of them consumed alcohol.
While they consumed alcohol and happily posed for photographs, the people waiting for buses at the place expressed severe displeasure and termed the protest ‘uncultured and uncivilised’. However, none of them dared to oppose it.
Criminal case
Meanwhile, taking a serious note of the issue, the Police Department has decided to book the agitators for consuming alcohol in a public place being an offence against certain provisions of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, the Karnataka Excise Act, 1965, and the Indian Penal Code.
“We are verifying the video footage that appeared in television channels and shall take action against them for violating laws,” G. Radhika, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu.
