Various progressive organisations staged a protest here on Monday by burning a copy of Manusmriti to condemn the burning of a copy of the Constitution by some miscreants at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on August 9.

The protesters, who gathered near Ambedkar Circle here, said that the action committed by some people in Delhi were against social equality of the people propagated by the Constitution.

In a memorandum submitted to the President through the district administration, the protesters demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the Delhi incident. Accusing those miscreants as being anti-equality, the protesters said that they [miscreants] believe in Manuvada which does not believe in social equality and follows the caste system.

Stating that creating communal divide in the country was the only motive behind such acts, the memorandum said that such people have not only disrespected the Constitution but also 120 crore Indians. Demanding a detailed probe into the matter, the memorandum said that different organisations must be involved in instigating the culprits to commit such an act of burning the Constitution.
