Activists of Communist Party of India (Marxists) (CPI-M) on Sunday staged a demonstration to register their protest against the hike of prices of petrol and diesel.

Terming the decision of hiking the prices of petrol and diesel as anti-common man, they also burnt the effigy of the Union government at the Gadagi Chennappa circle in the city.

The activists strongly criticised the Union government over repeatedly increasing the prices of petrol and diesel quoting hike in the prices of crude oil in the international market, which, according to them, had hard hit the common man who had to bear the brunt of the cascading effect of the decision as the prices of essential commodities would also sky-rocket.

Though it was possible for the BJP-led NDA government to avoid the hike by reducing the tax on fuel oil, it was not done to protect the private oil manufacturing companies and also clearly indicated that the Modi Government was pro-capitalists, they accused.

They demanded that the government should immediately roll back the prices besides taking steps to regulate the prices of fuel by allowing the Government-owned oil companies to extract oil and cancelling the contract given to the private oil companies.

Hulli Umesh, City Unit secretary, Satyababu, district committee member, Ms. Chandrakumari, Gangappa Pattar, Ms. Yerramma were among others in the lead.
