Senior Congress leader K. Prathapchandra Shetty took charge from pro tem Chairman of the Legislative Council Basavaraj Horatti after he was elected unopposed as Chairman of the Upper House on Wednesday.
Congratulating Mr. Shetty on his election, Council members described him as a man of a stature. Leader of the House Jaimala said Mr. Shetty was a respectable and responsible leader. Leader of the Opposition in the Council Kota Srinivas Poojary said Mr. Shetty, a four-time MLA and now a third-time MLC, had a clean political career.
Incidentally, both Mr. Shetty and Mr. Poojary have been elected to the Council from dual-member Dakshina Kannada Local Authorities constituency and both of them are from Kundapur taluk of Udupi district.
‘No hurdles’
After taking over, Mr. Shetty said he would take all leaders and members along while conducting proceedings of the Council. “I don’t see any hurdles in maintaining cordial relations with the members,” he told The Hindu .
