The Rani Chennamma Squad, a team of five policewomen, would patrol outside schools, colleges and at public places across the city.

The freedom of eve-teasers in the city will get curtailed from Independence Day as the district police will depute policewomen to take care of these trouble-makers.

The Rani Chennamma Squad, a team of five policewomen, would now be taking on the eve-teasers standing outside schools/colleges and in public places.

“After receiving complaints from people about the rising nuisance of eve-teasers in the city, especially outside schools and colleges, we have decided to deal with teh issue firmly by constituting a separate all-women squad here,” said Prakash Nikam, Superintendent of Police. Speaking to The Hindu, he said that he had first constituted such a team when he was serving as SP of Bidar district. Deciding to replicate such act in Vijayapura, he said the squad of Bidar witnessed tremendous success in curbing eve-teasing and instilling confidence among girls. Mr. Nikam said that the primary objective is to provide moral strength to girls who are afraid of eve-teasers.

“Girls feel confident if they notice women police officials standing to help them outside public places. At the same time, their presence sends a strong message to eve-teasers who will not dare stand outside schools to trouble girls,” he said.

The team would comprise of one ASI and five women constables, Mr. Nikam said that the squad would start patrolling from 8.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. in the city. It would travel in vehicle that has the emergency contact number for people to contact the control room for any help.

“The service would come into effect from August 15 by district In-charge Minister M.C. Managuli during the Independence Day programme at the district stadium,” he added.
