Senior Congress leader B. Janardha Poojary on Saturday said he recently met All India Congress President Sonia Gandhi and conveyed the sentiments of people of Dakshina Kannada against the ongoing Yettinahole water diversion project.

Mr. Poojary told presspersons here that he met Ms. Gandhi last Sunday and handed over a letter detailing the concerns of residents of Dakshina Kannada about the Yettinahole project. The situation has gone to such an extent that people of coastal Karnataka are incensed with the government and contemplating to demand a separate state, Tulu Nadu, Mr. Poojary told the party chief.

In such a situation, the high command should immediately intervene and ask the Chief Minister to halt the project. The huge sum earmarked for the project should be utilised to get water from other means to the parched districts, Mr. Poojary demanded.

He explained in the letter various shortcomings in the project, including availability of just 0.85 tmc ft. of water as against projected 24 tmc ft. water from Yettinahole and the alleged illegalities in awarding the contract for the work.
