In the Karnataka Assembly elections, the ‘Patils’ have again gained upper hand in Vijayapura district by winning more seats than any other person with a different surname.

Over 17 Patils had contested from the eight Assembly constituencies of the district. Of this they registered a victory in six constituencies. Three Patils each from Congress and BJP have won.

The winners are M.B. Patil, Shivanand Patil, Yeshwantraigouda Patil (all from Congress), and Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, A.S. Patil Nadahalli, and Somanagouda Patil Sasnur (all from BJP).

Compared to the last Assembly elections where four Patils had won, this time two Patils got added into the list; they are Basanagouda Patil Yatnal and Somanagouda Patil Sasnur. The remaining four are sitting MLAs.

Mr. M.B. Patil, won this time by a margin of nearly 30,000 votes against his rival, Vijugouda Patil in Babaleshwar constituency. In the last election, M.B. Patil won by a much lower margin of 4,000 votes. This time, his victory margin rose sharply, thanks to the irrigation projects he implemented in his constituency as Irrigation Minister. This was Vijugouda Patil third successive defeat by M.B. Patil.

Yeshwantraigouda Patil and Shivananda Patil have also retained their place but with a lower victory margin compared to the last Assembly election. Mr. Yatnal and Mr. Sasnur won this time after having lost the last time.

While Mr. Yatnal had contested on JD(S) ticket in the last election, Mr. Sasnur had contested on BJP ticket.

In Sindgi and Nagathan (SC reserved) constituencies none of the Patils registered a win. However, the faces changed as the residents here chose new MLAs.

While the people of Sindgi have given mandate to octogenarian, M.C. Managuli of the JD(S) by defeating Ramesh Bhusnur, MLA, BJP, the people of Nagathan have selected Devananda Chavan of JD(S).
