Overwhelming reponse to appeal

There has been an overwhelming response from different sections of the society to the district administration’s appeal for donations for the relief works after the floods. A release by the Department of Information and Public Relations stated that voluntary organisations, youth clubs, women’s organisations, workers’ unions, and individuals had responded positively and donated essential commodities to the relief centre set up.

Organisations and individuals, both from and outside the districts, have made donations at the relief centre, the release said.

Of 243.73 quintals of rice collected, 156.5 quintals have been distributed among the people.

Similarly, the centre has received 670 kg of jowar and 140 kg have been distributed. The centre has received 280 kg of wheat and 85 kg have been distributed. Of the 988 kg of green gram received, 420 kg have been distributed, the release said.

This apart, the centre has received other commodities like vegetables, soaps, toothpastes, edible oils, clothes, medicines, among others.

Meanwhile, the Department of Health and Family Welfare has suggested the people use pure drinking water to drink and to cook as the possibilities of the spread of water-borne diseases are high post floods.

There were possibilities of drinking water sources wells, and tanks being contaminated.

In absence of the purified drinking water units, people are advised to boil the water or add halogen tablets before use. Similarly, the Health Department has suggested against open defecation or urinating in open places.

The officials have also appealed to the public to inform in case of epidemics in their respective areas. People can dial 0836-2443505 in the case of an emergency.
