The Nagarika Horata Samithi has decided to collect public opinion with a view to bring pressure to bear on the State government to include Jagalur taluk in Chitradurga district as it has not seen any development after its merger with Davangere district in 1998. The decision was taken at a meeting of the Nagarika Horata Samithi office-bearers here on Monday. The members said that the taluk was included in Davangere district based on the Nanjundappa Committee recommendations to ensure its overall development. But the taluk has not seen any development in the last 20 years. The State government has not released funds for its development under the Bayaluseeme Pradhikara. Only Davangere, Harihar, Chennagiri and Honnalli taluks have seen development to some extent, but there has been no development in Jagalur taluk, they said.
The former Town Municipality president Thimmareddy said that it was only inevitable to include Jalgaur taluk back in Chitradurga district for finding a permanent solution to issues involving irrigation and other problems of the taluk. A series of agitations should be planned by including different organisations to pressure the State and the Union governments to take necessary steps in this regard.
“Irrespective of political parties, all leaders of the taluk should join hands with the agitators for the overall development of the taluk,” he added.
Farmer leader Anagodu Kotraswamy said that the leaders of all political parties have completely neglected development works in the taluk. These leaders speak about development only during elections and turn their back after winning the elections; so, a collective effort is very essential for the overall development of the taluk, he said.
The former zilla panchayat president C. Lakshman said that some political leaders may oppose the inclusion of Jagalur taluk in Chitradurga district owing to their political calculations. Therefore, the agitation should be planned systematically to bring pressure to bear on the State and Union governments.
Janata Dal(S) State general secretary K.B. Kallerudresh, Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee president N.S. Raju, Block Congress president Thippeswamy Gowda and Prakash Reddy were present.
