One vote made the difference for Kolar homemaker

June 05, 2015 02:59 pm | Updated 02:59 pm IST - Kolar

For Asha, a homemaker in Kolathammahalli under Beglihosahalli Gram Panchayat in Kolar taluk, Friday turned out to be a lucky day as she won the Gram Panchayat polls with a wafer-thin margin of single vote.

While Asha emerged victorious by securing 191 votes, her rival Rathnamma got 190 votes conceding the defeat.

When the counting of ballot papers of the seat was over at the Government Pre-University College here, the defeated candidate challenged the result and appealed for a re-counting. However, there was no change in the result when the staff concerned recounted the ballot papers.

Finally Asha was declared elected from the seat and a dejected Rathnamma as well as her supporters left the counting centre in a huff.

Previous record

In the Grama Panchayat elections held five years ago, a farmer leader T.M. Venkatesh emerged victorious in a similar fashion. He was elected from Toradevandahalli seat in Jannaghatta Grama Panchayat defeating his nearest rival by only one vote.
