Officials raid tuition centres in Mandya

Two teachers conducting private tuitions in violation of KEA caught; officials issue show-cause notice

Officials from the Department of Pre-University Education on Monday raided two tuition centres here where PU students were being tutored by lecturers of government and aided colleges in violation of rules.

The Karnataka Education Act prevents lecturers of government and private aided colleges from conducting. However, lecturers attached to several government and private aided colleges are allegedly holding classes for hundreds of students across the city.

Based on a tip-off, the team headed by H. Mariswamy (Deputy Director of Pre-University Education) raided a tuition centre at Vidya Nagar and Sri Lakshmi Janardhana School (private) here.

Mahesh Babu, a lecturer at the Government PU College at Kommerahalli, and Harish, a lecturer at Carmel PU College, were caught. While Mr. Babu was holding classes at his residence at Vidya Nagar, Mr. Harish was taking classes at Sri Lakshmi Janardhana School. They were found holding classes for at least 50 students during the raids.

The officials recorded statements from lecturers besides collecting names and details of the students. Later, the team members issued show-cause notice to the lecturers. The department has received complaints from parents that lecturers were not paying adequate attention to teaching in colleges, the DDPU said.

These complaints prompted the department to conduct raids on private tuition centres. The lecturers were dictating notes to the students when officials raided the tuition centres, he said. Meanwhile, the officials said that they would submit a report to the Department of Pre-University Education to initiate action against the lecturers.
