The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairman H.L. Dattu on Thursday took strong exception to various State governments, including Karnataka, not filing Action Taken Reports (ATRs) on recommendations made by the NHRC on atrocities against vulnerable sections of the people.

In his opening remarks at a two-day open-hearing session of the commission here, he said the recommendations pertained to atrocities on SC/ ST and other vulnerable sections of population, sexual harassment in various places, human trafficking, gender sensitisation and various other matters relating to human rights violation. But, the approach by the governments to end such atrocities is far from satisfying, he said. “The State governments should file ATRs on NHRC recommendations. I would appreciate an update on this issue by the Karnataka government after this two-day open hearing,” he said.

“Atrocities against SC/ ST communities is a very serious issue and proactive measures taken by the States to fight against such atrocities and ways it takes to ensure welfare schemes should be there for everybody to see,” he said.

The NHRC had awarded compensation in about 250 cases in such open hearings in recent months. The commission heard nearly 190 listed cases in Karnataka on Thursday and more cases will be taken up on Friday.
