Veterinary colleges in various districts will have state-of-the-art slaughter houses, Harsha Gupta, Secretary, Animal Husbandry, said in Bidar on Thursday.
“This will provide hands-on training to students. The government has a mandate to provide such slaughter houses in colleges as per veterinary council of India norms,’’ he said. These units will also serve another purpose. They will serve as pay-and-use facilities for meat producers’ cooperative societies, he said.
He was speaking to teachers and students at the Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University in the Nandi Nagar campus here.
“Commercial meat production is a subject that students have to study before they pass out. They also need some apprenticeship or hands-on training to help them meet demands of the industry. That is why higher education regulators like VCI insist on such facilities within college campuses. The government will take immediate steps to open modern slaughter houses in colleges”, he said.
The management of these centres will be done through student and stake-holder involvement. Meat producers cooperatives will be involved in the day-to-day operations of the centres. They will be able to use these facilities on custom hiring basis, Mr. Gupta said.
Vice Chancellor C. Renuka Prasad, directors, heads of various departments, and others were present.
